My dad would take us for trail walks while we were camping and he would tell us made-up stories (only to find out they were made up once I told my Indigenous childhood friends and them and their family never heard the story). When you snap the spine of the plant, there is a light stem and if you chew on it, it tastes similar to spearmint. Years later when I created this drawing for school, I found out it is actually called wild ginger. Ha. I quickly learned how glam that Métis woman is and when the opportunity came up to design her a tattoo, I knew exactly what to do. There are a number of Métis beaders who share their pride within their floral designs. Can you see the infinity sign? That movement of stitch is how the beaded version moves too, so if you look closely at the florals, there is a telltale sign that it’s Métis! This design was created to look glamorous with the flowing movement and lace like visuals to suite the wearer.
